Breast Augmentation Choices

October 30, 2024

Women who choose breast augmentation make a number of decisions about their implants. Should they be silicone or saline? Size C or D? What type of incision will be used? While these are common questions to consider, women also have choices when it comes to the profiles of their implants. At Dr. Darrell Perkins’ plastic surgery practice in Sydney, he helps patients choose breast implant profiles that are right for them.

What Are Breast Implant Profiles?

When it comes to breast implants, “profile” refers to the distance an implant projects from the body. Just as there are many implant sizes a woman can choose from, there are a number of profile options: low, moderate, moderate plus, high, and extra full. The higher the profile of a breast implant, the further it will project from the body, creating a more prominent silhouette.

  • Low profile implants offer the least amount of projection and have a wide base, making them ideal for women with naturally wide chests. Low profile implants can also be used to achieve subtle, natural-looking results.
  • Moderate profile implants are most common, and have a width and level of projection suitable for average builds.
  • High profile breast implants offer the greatest projection from the body and are ideal for petite builds. Because the base of the implants is narrow, they can be appropriately spaced on a narrow chest and still achieve full-looking results. High profile breast implants are also the least prone to rippling.

Choosing a Breast Implant Profile

When deciding which implant profile is right for you, your plastic surgeon will take into account:

  • Your desired results. First, you and your plastic surgeon will discuss your ideal results. Many women choose implants because they want larger breasts with a high level of projection. However, others appreciate the natural appearance that implants with lower projection and higher widths can offer. For instance, some women prefer low-projection implants because they like the “side-breast” look.
  • Your height and build. If you are petite, a low-projection implant may be too wide for your chest. On the other hand, if you have a larger build and your natural breasts are wide, high-projection implants may be too small in diameter. In order to achieve the full, proportioned breasts you desire, it’s important to choose an implant suited to your physique.

The type of implant you choose – silicone or saline – may also affect the projection of your breast implants. Your plastic surgeon will provide you with images of the results you can expect from several different implant sizes and profiles.
